This is the newsletter that I wanted to get out on Friday,
but wasn't able to.  You should be getting another
newsletter this week, maybe two.  I have an incredible sale
on two items planned that I know you're going to want to
hear about.  One is by Larry Becker & Lee Earle; the other

A number of newsletter subscribers have said that they would
appreciate a regular newsletter spotlighting items that have
already appeared as sort of a reminder and/or an update.  I
do plan on doing that and it will have a different subject
heading, so if you'd prefer not to read it simply delete it.

Kenton Knepper has released another lesson in his MIND
READING LESSON series.  See below for more info on number 7.
He's also released a new e-book called PENDULUM PROGRAMMING
which is a very unique approach to using pendulums.  It's on

Finally, Journal of the Mind will be kicking off the year
with Richard Mark.  I've been very proud of what the Journal
of the Mind has become and I honestly don't know how long I
can produce the issues, at least under the current format.
I do know, though, that many told me that the price was a
factor and so I've lowered the price to $29.97 for the year.
At that, it's a steal and it's also a great way to support
this site, which is certainly have its share of problems in

**** JHEFF AT THE CASTLE
I'll be performing at the Magic Castle this year the week of
Feb. 8, which ends on Feb. 14, which, of course, is

**** BOB CASSIDY'S WORKSHOP
Due to some fortuitous changes by the hotel, Bob is able to
reduce prices of his upcoming seminar to $500.  This is the
seminar that was hinted at after Mindvention last year.  It
will be held at the end of April and the main focus will be
on billet reading.  The even will be held in Seattle at a
hotel that's very close to the airport.

This workshop, as most are, has very limited seating.  At

I crowned this series the Best of 2009 because of its

MY COMMENTS:
When Redford's original book was released a few years ago,
it was groundbreaking in its thinking.  Its major flaw, if
one could consider it as such, is that to see it in action
was much more valuable and instructive.  Now, this work has
a welcome video component and that makes learning this much
easier.  In fact, there's even a section where you view the
performance and Redford explains what you're seeing.

What makes this an invaluable technique is that this
requires absolutely no gimmicks and no specific items.  You
can have the participant hold a ring, a coin, a key, or
anything else that can fit in a closed hand, which makes
this a skill you can do anytime and anywhere, so long as you
have two people.

A few years ago, Jerome Finley released his Thought Channel.
This was very similar, but the big difference is that
Finley's version wasn't the liar/truthteller conceit.  It
was the simpler "which-hand-is-it-in" plot.  He also
provided quite a few more ingenious tells that are not
included in Redford's work.  Most importantly, he charged
well over a hundred bucks for his work.  Now I truly feel
that such a strong technique is worth it, but the point is
at the price Redford is charging for his version, it's a
decidedly undervalued steal. And that is especially true
considering the original book was priced the same as the
DVD, which contains even more material at the subject.

Many mentalists are arming themselves with material that
they can do anywhere, anytime, and without any props.  In
other words, making mentalism look as real as possible.  For
a very small cost, Redford gives you an incredible course in
an invaluable skill and definitely a must-have for any
mentalist to study.

MY COMMENTS:
This is a terrific, well-made, fairly-priced utility item
available for the convenience of those without sewing
abilities (like me).  Osterlind has chosen a dark paisley
material that is not what Annemann used and he has folded
the cloth a bit differently than usual, but other than that
this is an ungimmicked handkerchief that is perfect for
blindfold work.

Included with the blindfold is an eight-page instruction
booklet which only explains four different uses: The
See-Through Blindfold (i.e., for Mystery of the Blackboard),
The Legitimate Blindfold, a third use that is a standard
method for blindfold work, and The Blindfold Drive.  Each
description uses a page and that's all that's necessary.
There are no routines explained here because this is a
utility prop and working mentalists should create their own.
However, if you'd like to see some routines then, as noted
in the blurb, check out the use of the blindfold in the 13
STEPS TO MENTALISM DVD.

As usual, Richard has put out a terrific product that is
suitable for any mentalist who is in need of well-made
utility blindfold.  If you're looking for a new, novel, and
unique blindfold with new principles and gimmicks, look
elsewhere.  This isn't it.  But if you need a solid working
professionals blindfold, the type described in many of the
classics, then this is very fairly priced, as most Osterlind
products are, and well worth the investment.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

THE BLURB:
The performer shows a menu card from a restaurant listing
various foods. Anyone is invited to come forth and secretly
write the name of any food from the menu on a blank index
card and drop it face down on a plate.

NO FORCES OR RESTRICTIONS. The performer says the special of
the day at the restaurant is two for the price of one. To
get the special the performer has to order the same item.
Performer than secretly writes down his choice from the menu
on another index card and drops it on another plate. Once
this has been done the performer and participant exchange
plates and both show the audience the name of the food
written on the index cards. Amazingly, the performer and
participant both chose the same food! As a final Kicker the
performer shows that he PREDICTED the food the participant
would choose.

No carbons used or secret impression devices of any kind.
The person is only give one stiff card to write on. Baffling
beyond words. This effect fooled almost everyone who saw it
at Devin's Lecture.

Complete with menu card and the needed gimmick. Comes with
full directions and bonus effect where the performer shows
he predicted the food that would be chosen.

MY COMMENTS:
A few may remember one of Devin Knight's earliest releases,
IMPOSSIBLE DEVINATION.  Legions loved it and made it a
bestseller.  Others didn't care at all for it.  I fell into
the latter category.  I was not impressed and didn't find it
very practical.  And most of you know I am a fan of most of
Knight's material.

This new version uses the same principle, but there are
significant improvements.  First, there is now a convincer
that makes the "gimmick" (it's hard to call it that) more
invisible.  And the theme of food makes sense to having a
couple of paper plates to use.  Those two changes make all
the difference.  That also means that the effect now has a
built-in theme and that's certainly a consideration in your
purchasing decision, especially if that theme won't fit your
style.

Everything you need to perform this is included in the
package: the paper plates, the blank cards, the menu, and
order tickets. All of these items can be easily replaced.
The 10 pages of instructions include variations, tips, and
plenty of photos.

This is one of the effects that Knight included in his
recent lecture series and he also included it in his
Mindvention lecture.  I must admit that I had a jaw-dropping
reaction to seeing an effect which I originally disliked
improved enough that I changed my opinion 180 degrees about
it and like it very much now.  If the premise appeals to
you, then this is definitely an item that you'll want to
check out.

MY COMMENTS:
Apparently, someone realized that Coinvexed was a bit too
expensive and can be made for a fraction of the cost.
Essentially, that's what this is.  By taking two of a
particular common item that you'll find in any sundry store,
you can alter them into making an anytime, anywhere coin
bending gimmick that works about the same as Coinvexed 2.0.
In some ways it's better and in some ways not.

One significant difference is that Coinvexed is disguised as
part of a Sharpie and this is not.  It's not disguised as
anything.  That may certainly be a deciding factor in your
purchasing decision if you are concerned about being burned
and need to have something disguised as something logical in
your hands, or prefer a method in which your hands are empty
at all times.  There is a fair amount of audience control
necessary, but you can end and start clean, as the DVD
explains.

It does claim that it will bend "almost any coin."  I didn't
check out this claim. I think half-dollars, and coins sized
like that, won't work well, but that's just a guess.
Quarter-sized coins and smaller will certainly work very
well.

This does work as advertised.  It can provide different
types of bends, is certainly portable like Coinvexed, and is
not difficult to make. The package includes the DVD and some
of the materials needed to construct the gimmick. I was
quite impressed with the simplicity of this and the nine
different routines that are included (although most are
simply handling variations of each other).  I also thought
that the inclusion of the same DVD material but with
different languages was clever and quite helpful.  As a note
on that, the actual instructions run about 50 mins, but a
second duplicate set of videos to accomodate the other
languages account for the total running time.  If this
sounds like it suits your style, it's certainly priced
fairly and worth checking out.

This past week in sunny Southern California we've been
having quite a bit of loud clouds, wet roads, and liquid
sunshine, not to mention a rare tornado or two.  It's been
refreshingly fun because we haven't had thunderstorms like
this in quite a few years.

But let's get back into the world of mentalism.  There's
some important news relating to Bob Cassidy and Richard
Osterlind below.  Also, as of the first of the new year, the
post office has raised rates on overseas packages,
specifically priority mail rates.  This is the shipping that
I prefer because most priority mail packages, with the
exception of the flat rate envelopes, are trackable.  First
class certainly works but I've had some serious issues with
a higher percentage of packages than I like.  In fact,
almost all of the packages that have been lost were sent
first class.  For now (while I look into it), if you're out
of the U.S., making a small order, and want a cheapest
price, then let me know and I'll look into alternatives.
Otherwise, I'll have to insist on priority mail.

MY COMMENTS:
Iain performs mostly for intimate sized audiences and these
routines definitely reflect that.  There's a variety of
different routines in here and I'll bet that a mentalist on
any level will find something interesting here.  The
routines certainly use the standard principles and you'll
really find nothing new in terms of principles, but you will
find some fresh ideas and there are certainly a few them.

My only complaint is that Iain lists the names of those he
credits, but doesn't specify the credit.  For example, on
one effect he credits "Bob Cassidy, Annemann, Richard
Busch," but doesn't specify the routine or book that each
contributed to his idea.  I wish he would have been more
specific, but at least he credits his ideas somewhat.  Oh,
and I would have liked to see a Table of Contents page, but
that's quibbling.

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this 123

MY COMMENTS:
Iain presents a quartet of intriguing ideas (actually more
than that if you consider that Psychic Hangman has several
variations).  Some of the routines and ideas explore the
theme of games - hangman, crossword puzzles (The Psychic
Hangman, Crossed Thoughts).  Postabulations is a
Confabulation variation using Post-It Notes.  Within these
routines, there's nothing new in terms of principles, so
you'll be disappointed if you're looking for those, but
Iain's work contains solid thinking and intriguing plots.
This 43-page book is available as a downloadable e-book or
as a soft-cover paperback (which is slightly higher, natch).

MY COMMENTS:
This is quite a fun presentation for a book test.  That's
really what you're paying for as the methodology is not new,
but its use is here is clever. It's also why I can't really
give you details about the routine.  You're buying the
presentation, essentially.  However, I can say it involves
ripping pages from a book that one hates and words are
chosen from one of the ripped pages.  This 9-page
downloadable e-book contains the complete routine and
explanation.

MY COMMENTS:
Well, it works.  That's the best I can say about this.  I
have several issues with this, though.  You may remember a
book test effect that involved dice, a notepad, and a book.
It required some preparation, especially if you wanted to
use a different book.  There have been many versions (many
of them knockoffs of the original, of course).

The most well-known is Paul Richards' BY CHOICE & BY CHANCE,
though I don't think even that's the original. This is
simply a variation of that.  Instead of dice, numbers are
called out, but it's done in somewhat of a very clever way.
The way it's presented on the instructional DVD, the
selection is contrived and has no justification.  With a few
seconds thought, I came up with a much better reason for
this process.  But that isn't on the DVD, of course.

Also, the "Any Book" claim is somewhat misleading.  If you
think that you can simply walk in and pick up any book and
do it, you'd be mistaken.  Again, think of the earlier
reference of the dice version.  That one can be done with
any book, but there must be preparation done.  Same here.
The DVD instruction explains how you can set up conditions
so that you can be prepared for the books that you'll find
or that audience members will bring, though there's no 100%
guarantee that will happen, plus you may have to prepare and
bring quite a lot of material.

It is quite obvious that this mentalism effect was created
by a magician (he previously released DEEP, which is a
balloon swallowing effect).  Otherwise, he might have known
that other performers released routines entitled AAA Book
Test (Michael Sibbernsen and Marc Paul).  The methods of
each are different than this, but still, at best, it's a
title that should have not been used.

Also, according to this blurb, this effect is perfect for
family and friends.  In other words, this suggests that this
is being marketed towards someone other than professional
performers, though it's talked about being as such on the
DVD.  This is certainly an easy-to-do effect and anyone can
do it: college students, high school students, bar patrons,
etc.

It is well-packaged as it comes with two gimmicks and DVD
instructions that do thoroughly cover the simple method. But
the bottom line is that for $40, though the number choice is
interesting, there's really nothing new here for the working
professional.  For the novice or hobbyist, there are cheaper
and just as effective book tests.

Back to Becker
Larry Becker's fabulous "Casino Royale" is a true classic of

variation of this brilliant routine that focuses on chance,
influence and luck involving money, blackjack and some
imaginary dice. This piece is a very good study of the
fundamental principles of three-way prediction style of
effect with tips learnt through countless performances of
such routines.

Our special thanks to Larry Becker for allowing us to use
and explain some of the brilliantly creative props and
principles from his original, commercially available "Casino
Royale" routine.

The Sweet Jar
Another example of the strength of attaching an engaging
plot in order to amplify the effect and make a routine
entertaining. This was one of the favourites with the
audience during the filming of the live show.

A large jar of sweets that has been on show throughout and
Paul invites three audience members to join him on stage to
try to guess the number of sweets. Each one of them has a
totally free choice and at the climax, not only does one of
the spectators manage to guess exactly right and finds a
prediction buried inside the sweets but unbelievably, Paul
has also managed to predict in advance, which of the
spectators that would be!

My Luckiest Day
The concept explained in this show-stopping finale is a
beautiful way to end any mentalism performance. The
confabulation plot has always been a firm favourite within
mentalism and Paul's tray revelation can be applied to
almost any plot or performance.

Throughout the entire show, right in the middle of the stage
is a small table that holds a tray that has a large
candlestick and candle standing upon it. At the start of the
show the candle is lit and remains in full view and
untouched throughout. During the course of the show, Paul
has various free choices made by different members of the
audience and has them keep a mental note of each one.

At the finale of the show, the candle is extinguished and
removed from the tray and Paul turns over the tray to show a
written prediction securely taped to the underside of the
tray on all sides. Impossibly the prediction matches every
single one of the free choices made throughout the show!

This is an unbelievable finale and destined to become a
classic way of presenting the confabulation routine. It can
be applied to many different types of revelation, in the
show, Paul uses times and dates that are selected by the
audience by you could have names, places, or just about
anything! No fancy boxes or backstage assistants are
required - this is the ultimate one-man confabulation for
stand-up and stage. The final image of the prediction taped
to the underside of a tray is a truly stunning climax to the
show!

Paul Stockman Interview & Discussion with Peter Nardi
Join Peter Nardi as he delves into Paul's background in
performing and how it all began for him in mentalism. You
will also learn the fascinating processes that go into
formulating routines, scripting them and rehearsal
techniques. Paul also emphasises the importance of being
entertaining and commercial to modern audiences as well as
tips on structuring a show correctly to make it flow
naturally and making methods invisible.

Advice on handling audiences and clients as well as
discussing his love for interesting narratives and
presentations are also addressed, including tips on knowing
how to adapt and work to different crowds and venues. This
is an extremely insightful and interesting section of the
DVD that very in-depth and filled with top-notch
professional advice from a highly experienced performer.

MY COMMENTS:
Before going any further, I must state up front that I'm
somewhat biased.  I knew Paul Stockman when he was making
the transition to a full-time performer and we had much
correspondence about it.  And I know he's become not only
successful, but a very busy pro.

What you get on the disc is solid material.  Paul does the
classics, but has his own spin on them.  Among the effects,
there are a chair routine, a Confabulation routine, and a
bank night routine.  In fact, the chair routine (Pick a
Chair), which is the opener of this set, and the
Confabulation routine (My Luckiest Day) are the strongest
items and the ones most will be talking about.

I found that the best part of this set was the interview.
As a warning, though, don't skip to the interview, but don't
stop and miss it either.  Paul and Peter Nardi discuss many
elements of the set on the disc that should be seen before
watching this final segment. If you watch the interview
first, it may spoil it for you.

In any case, the interview contains Paul's thoughts on
scripting, routining, choosing routines, rehearsing
routines, etc.  It's very practical advice from a real
working pro and a wonderful opportunity to get inside the
mind of someone who may be like you.  Paul started out as a
band drummer and turned to performing mentalism when he had
to switch careers.  His insight and experience on switching
careers is also quite valuable.

I only have one major criticism about this set.  I should
qualify this by saying that I've already mentioned this to
Paul and he agrees.  In his set, Paul performs an effect
with a clock.  It is similar in plot to Andrew Gerard's
brilliant REAL TIME, but the methodology is different.
Unfortunately, this effect, which bookends the act, is not
explained, nor is explained why it's not explained.  It's
just curiously missing. It's not even in the list of effects
in the ad blurb.  I can tell you that the clock does all the
work for you and I can tell you that the clock will be
available for sale soon, hopefully by spring of 2010.

This 2-disc set comes in a slipcase with a fold-out insert.
Though much of the information may not be new to very
experienced performers, this is a very solid, enjoyable, and
recommended DVD set.

MY COMMENTS:
Longtime readers know that I have a philosophy about buying
very expensive props.  One of the reasons why I love
mentalism is that most of our props can come right from the
local office supply store, or at least appear that way.

That said, I must say that this is an exception.  This is
because not only is it supposed to look like an authentic
handmade wooden box, but it is an exquisitely authentic
handmade wooden box.  Moreso, it is hands-off.  Anyone who
knows about OEM boxes knows that most of the time the
performer has to be in control of the box and maintain some
handling of it.  Not so in this case.  The performer needn't
touch this at all.  It is advised, though not necessary,
that the performer very briefly handle it, but that's only
to ensure that the mechanism hasn't failed.

When I saw Max with this at Mindvention 2009, I must say
that I fell in love with it, but decided to be a bit
prudent.  I was not going to purchase it unless I could come
up with a use for it.  And it had to be an immediate use for
it at that.  Needless to say, by the time the convention
ended, I had thought of a solid presentation for it.

Please remember that these are handmade so it may take
awhile to get yours.  I got mine in about six weeks, but
yours may come sooner if an assistant that Max plans on
using works out.  Also, Max made it a point to call me after
he'd sent it and we chatted for about an hour about the box.
You can't ask for any better service than that.

If there's any consideration that I'd point out it's that
the size of the box will make it difficult to fit into a
briefcase.  It will fit into a carry-on or small suitcase
though.  And, in traveling, you can certainly fill the box
with other props from your act to save space.

Max has taken a classic utility prop for mentalists and
turbo-charged it for the 20th century.  It may be pricey,
but it's worth it because it's all in the craftsmanship as
opposed to electronics.  I know I'm going to get a lot of
use out of mine.

workings of the box, two "tools" you'll need (both easily
replaceable, if necessary), and various materials to use for
some routines, such as coin envelopes and labels.

MY COMMENTS:
I'm always asked what the best cold reading system is.  And
many who ask seem to feel that cold reading is a series of
stock lines that you say.  Of course, that's not it at all.
Any cold reading is based on a system, such as palmistry,
Tarot, graphology, etc.  However, I do understand that when
one asks this that they are looking for a system that can be
used without any other tools.

Without question, the best for this Enrique Enriquez's
INVISIBLE READINGS.  But SHERLOCK & SHELLS by Richard Tenace
and Kenton Knepper comes in at a very close second.  I
ranked Enrique's book as the best product of that year and
I'll definitely rank this one as one of the tops as well.
In fact, the Sherlock reading and the Invisible Readings can
go together quite well.

The Sherlock Holmes Approach to Reading Everyone (SHARE) is
an approach that relies on the basic observation of people,
just like Sherlock Holmes would have done.  Several of these
techniques have been published before, but Richard Tenace
has combined them into one easy to follow manuscript which
includes the way he does it.  In other words, this is
real-world work on the subject. For performers, this is also
valuable because it will allow one to make casual and
correct comments about participants while performing the
effects.

Also included in this package is an updated version of
Shells of the Seer.  I've commented on this as a separate
item, which is still available.  The separate package
contains the shells and this package contains only the
manuscript, but it has been revised to include some new
ideas.

Briefly, the shells are a very interesting prop to use, but
the reading is of the colors of the shells.  Each one is
painted a different color and the choice of shells, or
color, determines the reading.  There is also an effect
included with the shells.  Kenton has gone over color
reading quite extensively in his work and, though I very
much like this idea, I find the Sherlock Holmes work much
more versatile and useful to the working mentalist.
Interestingly, the blurb puts the Shells as the main work
and the Sherlock Holmes manuscript as the bonus.  I feel it
should be the other way around.

The Sherlock Holmes Approach to Reading Everyone is 54 pages
long and the Shells of the Seer is 8 pages.  They are
different downloadable files included in the package, along
with a tick sheet for the SHARE, a table card sample, and an
ad sample.  The latter three items are from Richard Tenace.
This is very, very useful stuff and highly recommended.

I know that this is a tad late, but there are reasons for
it.  I had to wait to see if a particular product actually
came out.  Sure enough it was shipped out just before
Christmas and I received mine just after the first of the
year.  That product is the final product listed below.  The
other issues are that I spent the holidays upgrading to
Windows 7.  Everything's fine now, but it's a pain to
upgrade, not to mention that my web-authoring software's
been upgraded, too.  For those who've ever gone through that
process that should say enough.

Okay, let's get into the topic of this newsletter.

By the end of December, there was little doubt as to what I
would crown the Best Mentalism Product of 2009 among all the
products that I reviewed and added to my website.  Before I
officially announce my choice (though I've no doubt your
eyes skipped a few lines already to find out and are now
coming back up to these words to find out why), let me
explain what I was looking for when I made my choice.

The BMP of 2009 had to be something with value to both the
novice and the professional mentalist.  Preferably, it had
to contain material, or be a utility prop, that was exciting
and fresh.  Lastly, though still somewhat important when
ranking these, is if it had more value than the other
products.

In other words, if a mentalist had been on a desert island
for the year, came back at the end of December, and said, "I
can buy one product right now from 2009 that I missed, what
should I get?"  That answer produces the Best Product of
2009 and if the question shifts to ten best products that
answer shifts to the top ten.

Also, I must remind everyone that this is a highly
subjective list.  Use this as a guide, not as a bible.  Just
because it's on the list doesn't mean you HAVE to get it,
unless you agree with most of my choices.  And if you ask me
in a couple of weeks, I might actually give you a different
set of products.

Finally, I decided to give all creators a chance and limited
each creator to only one item on the ten best list.  Thus,
there are ten products and ten creators.  Yeah, I know,
that's arbritary, but that's the nature of this list.  My
rules, my list, etc.  Next year, I may do it differently.

With that caveat in mind, here is my choice for the Best
Mentalism Product of 2009:

The MIND READING LESSONS series by Kenton Knepper et. al.

I've said this many times, but mentalism is built on ideas,
not props.  Therefore, ideas are far more valuable to the
working mentalist than the latest gimmick.  After all, to
walk up to someone and be able to read or control their
minds, you shouldn't need anything.  And quite a bit of what
mentalists do concerns the details of how and what we say to
convey the impression that we know.

This series is an exploration of those techniques and
contains material that is fresh, updated, and reprinted.
Each lesson contains so much information that I'm certain
that even the most seasoned pros will find something they
will be excited to use.  And at $20 a lesson, this is a
bargain.  I've seen (and admittedly published) e-books that
sell for much more and contain much less than these.

Like any anthology of ideas and effects, not every included
item will be to one's liking, but that is hardly a
criticism.  To me, this series is like a good movie or book.
The more I revisit the works, the more I get.  The first
time through I picked out the nuggets that I really liked.
I've read a few of these lessons twice now and found a few
more ideas that I passed up the first time around.

I'm finding this to be a wonderful resource, which continues
to grow (by the time you read this #7 may be out), and thus
is my pick for the year's best.

Here are the rest of the top ten, listed in alphabetical
order, with additional mentions of other products that
deserve to be on the Year's Best List.

1. ARTFUL MENTALISM: AN EVENING WITH BOB CASSIDY & 3 SECRETS
(Bob Cassidy)
Oh, you know I had to put something from Bob on the list.
Bob is arguably the most influential mentalist of the last
few decades and whenever he has something to say, one
listens.  This teleseminar, hosted by Michael Weber, has Bob
addressing many questions and concerns of the contemporary
mentalist. 3 SECRETS, which was intended to be a standalone
teleseminar and instead became a sequel, includes some new
principles and routines, plus additional invaluable advice
for the performer.  Because 3 SECRETS unintentionally became
a sequel, they sort of go together as one.

Also, this year, Bob released SEANCE and THE INVISIBLE
BILLET.  I know very well that some will think that one of
these two should have gone into the top ten instead and I
certainly won't disagree.  I do like them all (and, yeah,
perhaps I'm biased because I produced them for Bob).

2. CORINDA'S 13 STEPS TO MENTALISM DVD (Richard Corinda and
Richard Osterlind)
Whenever one creates a visual guide to a major work in a
field, one creates a major undertaking.  Richard and L&L
should be congratulated for their accomplishments.  It is
certainly a must-have companion to the book.  Yes, I agree
that in some places the lessons could have been stronger
(such as showing more detail on how to use a NW, for
instance), but these are minor points.  It's still an
impressive set and the key word is that it is a "guide," not
a comprehensive video version of the book.  And though much
of the material is classic, I think that many professionals
will find a revisit of this material through Richard's
viewpoint to be a fresh and inspiring look, as I'm sure
there are one or two gems you may have overlooked.

Let me also mention Richard's MYSTIQUE and MIND MYSTERIES
GUIDE BOOK, two other releases from 2009 that are definitely
must-have purchases for the working mentalist.

3. ENERGY BILL (Andrew Gerard)
This is an anywhere, anytime PK demonstration with a bill
and it could be borrowed.  It's easy to do and requires no
gimmicks.  It's very clean.  What more do you want in an
effect like this?  And, if you're not a fan of PK work (as I
must admit), this can be as part of a seance, or something
else.  Either way, and no matter how you construct the
presentation, this is a killer effect to have in one's
arsenal.

4. THE LARSEN MENTAL MYSTERIES (William Larsen, Sr.)
Todd Karr, of Miracle Factory, put out quite a bit of
material for mentalists this past year.  Most of it is
archival stuff, but good archival stuff and worth getting.
ANNEMMAN: ENIGMA, STUART CUMBERLAND: VICTORIAN MIND READER,
THE MENTAL MYSTERIES OF W.G.MAGNUSON, and DUNNINGER: AIRWAVE
MENTALISM CD are all great products and certainly entries on
the complete best of the year, but I had to pick one for
inclusion in the top and it would have to be THE LARSEN
MENTAL MYSTERIES.  Bill Larsen's work has always been
considered highly regarded.  This disc contains his classic
and now hard-to-find MENTAL MYSTERIES OF WILLIAM W. LARSEN,
SR.  It also includes many other rare manuscripts and
recordings that mentalists of all levels will certainly
appreciate.

5.  THE MANCHURIAN APPROACH (Anthony Jacquin)
My jaw is still aching from watching the incredible
multi-disc set.  I'm familiar with the basics of hypnosis,
but Anthony Jacquin has some powerful techniques that are
almost too good to believe and that I'm a bit nervous to
actually try.  Being able to say something and control your
participants is a valuable skill for any mentalist and the
information here, like contact mindreading and billet work,
is serious information for the serious mentalist.

6. MENTALIST'S DREAM BOX (Max Krause)
Sure, it's an expensive OEM box, and, sure, one doesn't need
it.  A couple of Kleenex boxes and you can make one for
under $10.  But this is an incredibly beautiful and
well-crafted wooden version which allows for some features
that you can't do with Kleenex boxes.  Namely, the box can
be remain locked and in the audience's hands at all times.
The performer never needs to touch the box as the box does
all the work.  Obviously, if you can't find a use for such a
prop, then don't get this.  It's certainly pricey, but it's
worth every penny if you can use this.

7. MIND READING LESSONS (Kenton Knepper, et.al.)
Kenton was really on a roll this year.  KONTROL, SYMBOL
READING AND REPROGRAMMING, and SIGNS OF INFLUENCE are all
truly great products.  However, the sheer amount of material
in the MIND READING LESSONS made that product the one I
chose as Kenton's main entry in the top ten, as mentioned
above.  But the other three also certainly belong in a
comprehensive Best of 2009 list.

8. QUARTET (Jack Kent Tillar)
TRIO, Jack's first book, became an instant classic.  With
tons more material on two-person codes, walk-around
mentalism, long distance effects, and predictions, Jack
created a series of "musical" books of mentalism.  The most
recent and the only one to debut in 2009, QUARTET, which is
subtitled "Up Close And Personal Mentalism," became one of
the most popular in the series.

9. PSYCHOLOGICAL SUBTLETIES 3 (Banachek)
I ranked the second volume in the series as Best of the Year
2006.  Though I feel the material here is comparatively not
as strong as the material in first two volumes, it still has
some great stuff in it and is a must-have to sit next to the
other two classic entries in this series.

10. SHERLOCK HOLMES APPROACH TO READING EVERYONE (Richard
Tenace)
This is a cold reading technique that allows you to read
people by just observing them.  For those who want the
ability to simply walk up to someone and tell them things
about themselves without using Tarot cards, palmistry,
numerology, astrology, etc., then this is it.  This is a set
of techniques, actually, that aren't new, but it's been
presented in an easy-to-follow format with examples in one
document.  These techniques, whether you already know them
or not, are must-haves for every mentalist.

Also, Richard Tenace released the S.A.R. TOOL KIT and
BUSINESS CARD READINGS, which are highly recommended also.

I need to re-emphasize that this list is purely subjective
and fickle.  In fact, I really wanted to put some things on
the list which would have inflated the traditional ten best.
Jon Allen's THE PAIN GAME, Chuck Hickok's THOUGHT-FULL
TELEPATHY, Starke's SUPER SIMPLE Q&A, Scott Grossberg's DECK
OF SHADOWS, and Simon Shaw's DIRECTOR'S CUT II would have
been 11-15 had my list gone out that far.

If I had to pick the absolute mentalism product released in
2009, without any limitations, there is no question my pick
would be:

BASCOM JONES' MAGICK from Collector's Workshop/Viking Magic

Now, they have released Magick before, four volumes worth.
But there was supposed to be a fifth volume that was never
completed.  Also, the issues in those volumes were compiled
and re-organized.  Many contributions were missing.

With this new five-volume set, Bascom Jones' Magick has
finally been reprinted right.  All 496 issues, plus the
extra issues, have been reprinted exactly as they were
printed in a limited edition of five beautiful hardbound
volumes.

Without question, this is a must-have for every serious
mentalist.  Of course, if you already have the original
issues, then you don't need this because you already have
the material.  Otherwise, start the new year, and max out
your credit card if you have to, because this set is worth
it.

is there a template for the various front/back/spine portions that we can use for layouts, etc..
